A Florida lottery winner’s family has condemned the death of his two daughters after they died from a brain aneurysm, saying the deaths are “devastating” for the entire community.
Victoria Dejesus, the daughter of Florida lottery winners Matthew and Stephanie Dejasus, was one of three lottery winners to die on Sunday.
The Dejases were among more than 100 people killed in Florida’s lottery jackpot in November, which was the state’s largest since 1998.
Their family told CNN they had been planning to celebrate the first anniversary of their birth, but the tragedy has been especially difficult.
“This is really hard to comprehend,” Victoria’s sister, Jennifer Dejescu, told CNN.
“We feel so bad for all the people that are out there that are grieving.
It’s really hard.
It is devastating.
It just tears us apart.”
In addition to the loss of their children, the Dejésus family is now trying to sort out the logistics of their next celebration.
The couple’s son, Ryan Dejos, said he was “heartbroken” and “devout”.
“I feel like it’s the last straw,” he said.
“It’s the hardest part, I think.”
He said they have been working through a lot of issues and were hoping for some help from the lottery’s parent company, MGM Resorts International, but they were hoping the money would be spent on other things.
“The money’s going to help the family,” he added.
“But we’re not going to stop trying to get a second life.”
The families’ brother, Ryan Jorgensen, said they would need to “get together and work it out together”.
“It’s hard to talk about these things with our families,” he told the Miami Herald.
“That’s the difficult part.”
The Dejas are believed to have won $1.3 million (US$1.4 million) in the 2016 Florida Lotteries Mega Millions.
The state lottery said the couple’s victory was the largest for a single ticket in history.
In Florida, the lottery has previously been criticised for the slow pace of the jackpot distribution.
In October, the state lottery posted a message on social media saying the jackpots had been distributed in the first 24 hours of November.
But it did not mention that the lottery had not reached the $1 million mark.
In January, a US state lottery board member said he thought the system was working fine, but that there were still problems.
“We’re in the process of trying to figure out how we can improve things,” said US lottery executive director Joe Corbett.
“I think it’s important to say that the system is working well and there are still some glitches in some of the states that we’re going to be working with and looking at to improve it.”
But Corbett was not convinced that the jacklot was a sustainable model.
He said in a statement: “We recognize that there are some things we can do better.
We are also in the final stages of evaluating our operations.
We continue to work with the industry to improve the distribution process.”MGM Resorts told CNN the state is in “continuing dialogue” with the US lottery, but said it did have a “good working relationship” with its US counterparts.
